Seychelles is warm, equatorial, humid in patches, dry in others. You pack less than you’d think but the few things you bring really need to be the right ones.
The minimum list
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+). Many sun creams sold elsewhere are illegal on Seychelles’ reefs. Bring oxybenzone-free.
- Sun hat with a brim, sunglasses. Sun is strong, equator.
- Light cotton/linen clothes. 25–30°C every day. Smart-casual is enough for any restaurant.
- Light rain layer. Tropical showers happen any month.
- Swimwear (at least two sets). One in the laundry, one on you.
- Reef shoes or sturdy sandals. Granite + sand + coral fragments. Closed-toe sandals save toes.
- Snorkel mask + fins. Rentals exist but a personal mask fits better. Bring your own.
- Insect repellent. Mosquitoes after dusk, especially inland.
- Plug adapters. UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). Bring 2. Most rooms have one socket.
- Power bank. Long boat days drain phones.
- Light layer for the plane and air-con. Mahé airport gets cold.
What people forget
- Dry bag. Phone, money, passport copy on boat days.
- Quick-dry travel towel. Hotel towels off-property are heavy.
- Universal SIM unlock. Local SIMs (Cable & Wireless, Airtel) are affordable; your phone must be unlocked.
- Cash in small denominations. Taxis and ferries don’t always have change for large bills.
- Travel insurance documentation. Required for the Travel Authorisation.
- Reef-safe lip balm. Sun burns lips fast on the boats.
- A long-sleeve UV shirt. For snorkelling without sunscreen-skin.
- One pair of decent shoes. For the one fancy dinner.
What to leave home
- Formal clothes. No dress code is that strict.
- Heels. No road or path needs them.
- Hairdryer. Hotels have them.
- Iron / steamer. Nobody needs ironed clothes here.
- Heavy fiction. Bring a Kindle.
Frequently asked questions
Are mosquitoes a problem in Seychelles?
Mild. Some areas inland have a few after dusk; bring repellent. No malaria, no significant dengue.
Do I need a wetsuit?
No. Water is 27–30°C. A rash guard or shorty is enough for divers. Snorkellers wear nothing.
What about a drone?
Allowed but restricted near airports, naval bases and government buildings. Declare it at customs.
Can I bring shampoo / liquids in checked luggage?
Standard international rules. The plastic-bag rule applies in carry-on. Resort shampoo is generally decent if you want to travel light.
