Seychelles is a beach destination, yes, but the beaches are the easy bit. Here are the experiences worth structuring a trip around. The ones travellers come back twenty years later still talking about.
1. Walk among free-roaming giant tortoises
The Aldabra giant tortoise breeding programme on Curieuse Island has 250+ tortoises wandering loose around the ranger station. They are accustomed to people and tolerate close approach. A 6-month-old child can sit beside one and be safe.
2. See the coco de mer forest at sunrise
Vallée de Mai opens at 8am. Get there at 8:00 sharp, hire a guide for the natural-history depth, and you’ll have the world’s biggest seed forest more or less to yourself for an hour.
3. Snorkel with sea turtles
Turtles are common in Seychelles. Green and hawksbill species. The best chances: Anse Source d’Argent lagoons (juvenile greens), Anse Severe (hawksbills around the rocks), and any St-Pierre snorkel trip.
4. Dive Shark Bank or Aride Bank
Open-water divers can reach Mahé’s Shark Bank (granite seamount, grey reef sharks, sometimes whale sharks). Better-conditioned divers should consider Aride Bank off Praslin’s north. Vertical granite walls, eagle rays, 30m visibility.
5. Cycle La Digue
Rent a bike at La Passe (SCR 100/day), follow the west-coast road south through L’Union Estate to Anse Source d’Argent, walk on to Petite Anse and Anse Cocos. Returnable to any of the four north-coast beaches by sunset.
6. Watch sunset from Mission Lodge
Mission Lodge at 500m elevation on the spine of Mahé gives a panoramic view from coast to coast. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, bring a layer, find a quiet bench.
7. Have dinner at a Wednesday-night Beau Vallon fish market
Every Wednesday and Saturday, the Beau Vallon beach turns into an open-air food market. Fresh grilled fish, Creole sides, sega drumming, cheap drinks. The best food evening on the island.
8. Take a private boat day to Cousin and Aride
The two seabird-sanctuary islands off Praslin’s north coast. Cousin (closed weekends) has the Seychelles warbler recovery story; Aride has the largest seabird density in the Indian Ocean.
9. Hike Trois Frères
The mountain trail behind Sans Souci road on Mahé. 2-3 hours each way. Endemic plants, mountain birds, the best central-Seychelles view at the top.
10. Spend an evening at Le Jardin du Roi
Le Jardin du Roi spice garden in the hills above Anse Royale. Self-guided spice walk, then dinner on the terrace as the sun sets over the offshore islands.
