An easy, pretty beach on the north-west coast of La Digue, a short cycle from the village. Calm snorkelling on settled days and one of the island’s loveliest spots to watch the sun go down.
Easy island beauty
Anse Severe sits on the north-west coast of La Digue, and after the effort of the island’s wilder beaches it is a gentle pleasure. It is an easy, flat cycle from the jetty and the village at La Passe, right beside the coast road, so it is one of the most accessible beaches on an island where the bicycle is king. Granite boulders punctuate the pale sand, and the water is often calm and inviting.
It has a relaxed, local feel, popular with islanders and visitors alike, and its west-facing aspect makes it a favourite gathering spot as the day ends. Few things beat propping your bike against a palm and watching the sky turn over the water here.
Snorkelling and sunsets
On calm days the clear, shallow water and the rocks make for pleasant, easy snorkelling close to shore, with reef fish among the granite. As with all of La Digue’s more open beaches, take care when there is swell, but in settled conditions it is one of the gentler swims on the island. Come in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset, which is the beach at its very best.

★★★The beach was beautiful but the sea was quite wavy and it made snorkeling impossible even on high tide. Don’t bother going here on low tide, the Anse Source d’Argent is better on low tide.

★★★★Overcrowded beach, but a really nice atmosphere. Water shoes recommended because there are many corals and rocks on the shore
