A remote, story-rich beach on the wild coast of La Digue, named for shipwrecked sailors of old. A hike-in hideaway for travellers chasing solitude and a touch of island history.
History on a wild shore
Anse Lascars is one of the remote, hard-to-reach beaches on the wilder side of La Digue, and it carries a name steeped in island lore. The Lascars were sailors, and the beach is said to recall those once shipwrecked or put ashore on this lonely coast. Today it is a quiet, unspoilt place, reached by a walk through forest and over rock, and reaching it feels like a small adventure in itself.
The reward is seclusion and raw natural beauty, granite, greenery and the open sea, on a stretch of coast that few visitors ever see. For travellers who like their beaches wild and their walks with a story, it is a memorable find.
Getting there, and caution
The path is rough and unmarked in places, so a little care, sturdy footwear and ideally local guidance make the walk safer and more rewarding. Facilities are nonexistent, so carry water and sun protection. As with all of La Digue’s exposed beaches, the open ocean means surf and currents can be strong, so swimming should be approached with real caution.
Come for the solitude, the scenery and the sense of stepping off the map, on an island that still keeps a few secrets.
