Chez Jules
A long-running Creole restaurant on the quiet east side of La Digue at Anse Banane, well worth the bike ride. Honest island cooking in a simple setting close to the water.
Out at Anse Banane
Chez Jules sits on the eastern side of La Digue at Anse Banane, away from the busier stretch near the jetty, and getting there is part of the appeal. You ride out by bicycle along the island’s flat coastal track, past greenery and quiet coves, and arrive somewhere that feels genuinely local.
The setting is simple and rustic, shaded and close to the water, the opposite of a polished tourist restaurant. For a lot of visitors that unhurried, end-of-the-track feel is exactly why it stays in the memory.
Creole cooking worth the ride
The food is straightforward island fare done with care, grilled fish, octopus curry and Creole sides, the sort of cooking that suits the surroundings. It is not about frills, it is about a good plate of local food eaten somewhere peaceful after an easy ride across the island.
The kitchen is small and hours can be relaxed, so check ahead and allow time. Pair it with a swim at one of the east-coast beaches and you have an easy, memorable half-day away from the crowds.
