KOT MAN-YA EXOTIC FLOWER GARDEN
A private tropical garden above Anse Royale, planted over decades by one dedicated collector. Heliconia, orchids, palms and lily ponds crowd a green hillside, and the colour is extraordinary.
One gardener’s life work
Kot Man-Ya, which means Man-Ya’s place in Creole, is exactly that, a private garden built up over many years by a passionate plantsman on a hillside above Anse Royale in the south-east of Mahe. It is not a grand botanical institution but something more personal, a living collection assembled by someone who clearly loves plants, and that affection shows in every corner.
The garden gathers exotic and tropical species from across the world alongside the flora of Seychelles. Heliconia and ginger blaze in reds and oranges, orchids cling to trunks, palms of every shape rise overhead, and water lilies float on quiet ponds. For anyone who gardens at home, or who simply likes colour, it is a rewarding and unhurried hour.
A calm hour off the coast road
Paths wind through the planting past ponds and shaded seating, and the whole place is small enough to enjoy at a gentle pace without a long walk. Birds and the occasional tortoise add to the sense of a quiet, living garden rather than a manicured park. It works beautifully as a cool, green contrast to a morning on the beach.
The garden sits close to Le Jardin du Roi spice garden and the beaches of the south-east, so it slots naturally into a day exploring this warm and lovely corner of the island.
