The studio of the Seychelles’ most celebrated painter, on the west coast of Mahé. Vivid, teeming watercolours of island life, and a warm family welcome that makes a visit a real highlight.
The islands’ best-loved artist
Michael Adams is the most famous artist the Seychelles has produced, and his studio at Anse aux Poules Bleues on the west coast of Mahe is a genuine cultural landmark. For decades he has painted the islands in a style all his own, dense, joyful, almost jungle-like watercolours bursting with colour, light and the tangled life of the tropics. To stand in front of his work is to see the Seychelles through the eyes of someone who has spent a lifetime looking closely at it.
The studio is a modest, welcoming place rather than a formal gallery, and that is its charm. Visitors are often received by the Adams family themselves, and the chance to talk about the work, watch the process and choose a print or an original is what makes so many people call it a highlight of their trip.
Visiting the studio
You can browse original paintings alongside more affordable signed prints, cards and reproductions, so there is something to take home at most budgets, and every piece carries a real sense of place. The setting on the quiet west coast, near Baie Lazare, adds to the pleasure of the visit.
It is a working studio, so it is worth checking that it is open before making the trip out, and giving yourself time to linger. For anyone interested in the art and soul of the islands, this is an essential stop.
