Mahé is the heart of Seychelles. 27 km long, 8 km wide, granite mountains in the centre, ocean on every side, and around 80,000 people living along its coasts. It’s also where almost every visitor lands, even those who never stay.
The shape of the island
Imagine an oblong with a spine of granite mountains down the middle. The eastern coast is the urban side. Victoria the capital, the international airport, the harbour, the busiest beaches around Beau Vallon to the north. The western coast is quieter, wilder, with the longest beaches and the densest jungle.
The road network is essentially one coastal loop (with a couple of cross-island connectors at Sans Souci and La Misère). You can drive around the whole island in about 3 hours if nothing slows you down.

Getting around Mahé
Rent a car. About SCR 800–1,200/day for a small hatchback. SPTC public buses (SCR 7 per trip) cover every corner of the island but are slow. Taxis are metered and reasonable for short hops. Drive on the left.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mahé worth visiting if I’m already going to Praslin and La Digue?
Yes. Mahé has the best dive sites, the longest beaches, the highest mountain viewpoints, the only city (Victoria) and the only proper restaurant scene. Even two nights on Mahé is worth it.
How long do I need on Mahé?
Three nights covers the headline experiences. Five lets you really know the island. Anything over a week and you’re at danger of needing to repeat beaches, which is no bad thing.
Best part of Mahé for first-time visitors?
Beau Vallon on the north coast. Easy swimming, restaurant choice, base for north and central island day-trips, sunset view across Silhouette.
