ANSE MACHABÉE
A quiet, wild beach on the untouristed south-east of Mahé. Big granite, few footprints and the honest, everyday beauty of a coast most visitors simply drive past.
Off the beaten track
Anse Machabee is one of the string of quiet beaches along the south-east coast of Mahe, south of Anse Royale on the road that curls toward the wild southern tip. It sees far fewer visitors than the famous names, and that is its whole charm. There is no resort, no crowd and often barely another soul, just pale sand, sculpted granite and the sound of the sea.
The setting is classic south-east Mahe, green hills tumbling down to the coast and boulders framing the bay. For travellers who like to find their own beach and have it to themselves, this stretch of coast rewards a little exploring.
A local beach
This is a natural, undeveloped beach rather than a manicured swimming spot, so facilities are minimal and the sea should be read with care, as parts of the south-east coast catch swell and current when the trade winds are up. On a calm day it can be a gentle, beautiful place for a swim and a long, quiet stretch of sand for a walk.
It sits close to Anse Royale and the other south-eastern beaches, so it fits easily into a day spent exploring this warm, low-key corner of the island.
