The calm, granite-framed beach at the heart of L’Union Estate on La Digue, gateway to the island’s most famous stretch of coast. Sheltered water and the classic postcard scenery of the islands.
At the gates of the famous coast
Anse Union lies within the historic L’Union Estate on the west coast of La Digue, at the start of the celebrated run of coast that leads to Anse Source d’Argent. This is the postcard Seychelles, huge, smooth granite boulders, pale sand and shallow turquoise water, in the gentlest and most sheltered corner of the island. The old coconut estate behind it, with its giant tortoises, vanilla plantation and traditional copra mill, adds a layer of history to the beauty.
Because it sits inside the estate, reaching the beach usually means paying the small L’Union entrance fee, which also opens up the plantation and the walk toward Source d’Argent. It is a small price for one of the loveliest and most photographed stretches of coast on earth.
Calm water and easy days
The reef and the granite keep the water here calm and shallow for much of the year, which makes it a gentle, easy place to swim and wade, and a favourite with families. The scenery does the rest. Between the boulders, the palms and the clear water, it is hard to take a bad photograph.
Give yourself time to combine the beach with the estate and the walk on to Source d’Argent, a short, flat and utterly beautiful stroll that is one of the essential experiences of La Digue.
