POLICE BAY AND PETIT POLICE
The wild southern tip of Mahé. A dramatic, empty beach where the full ocean crashes ashore, stunning to behold and dangerous to swim, reached by a beautiful drive to the end of the road.
The end of the island
Police Bay sits right at the southern tip of Mahe, and reaching it feels like arriving at the edge of the world. The road winds down through the green south of the island and simply ends near the sand, opening onto a broad, wild beach with nothing but open ocean beyond. There are no resorts, no vendors and usually almost no people, just white sand, granite, wind and the roar of the surf.
The drive there is a large part of the pleasure, running past the tea plantation country and the quiet villages of the deep south. Nearby, the smaller Petit Police adds another pocket of the same raw, beautiful coast for those who want to explore a little further on foot.
Beautiful, and to be respected
The honest warning is essential here. Police Bay is completely open to the ocean with no protecting reef, and the currents and shore break are powerful and genuinely dangerous. This is not a swimming beach. People have got into serious trouble in the water here, so the rule is simple, admire it, walk it, photograph it, but stay out of the sea.
Seen that way, it is one of the most memorable places on Mahe, a reminder that these gentle-looking islands sit alone in a very large ocean. Bring water and everything you need, take your rubbish home, and give yourself time to enjoy the drive and the sheer wild beauty of the south.

★★★★★Beautiful beach, unspoiled it seems. Lovely mini hike through jungle getting there. There was no cafe / restaurant. No shade either. But as said, beautiful. We didn’t go in the water, the current was too strong (Feb 2026)

Come for the drive and the drama, not for a swim. The sea here is genuinely dangerous, so keep out of the water, and instead give yourself time to walk the empty sand and enjoy the wild end of the island.
