A compact, characterful museum in the heart of Victoria telling the natural story of the Seychelles. Coco de mer, giant tortoises and the islands’ strange, wonderful wildlife under one roof.
Exhibits on island history from colonial times to the present, including slavery & Creole culture.
The natural story of the islands
The National Museum of Natural History sits in central Victoria, a short step from the clock tower, and it packs the extraordinary natural history of the Seychelles into a compact, old-fashioned and rather charming space. This is the place to make sense of what makes these islands so unusual, ancient fragments of a lost continent, marooned in the Indian Ocean, that evolved a cast of plants and creatures found nowhere else on earth.
The displays run from the famous coco de mer, the giant double coconut that is the islands’ botanical emblem, to giant tortoises, unique birds, insects and marine life, along with the geology and folklore that shape the Seychelles story. It is unfussy and easy to absorb, a genuinely useful primer before you head out to see the real thing.
A quick, worthwhile stop
It is small, so a visit takes well under an hour, and that makes it easy to slot into a walk around the compact capital. For families and curious travellers it adds real depth to the beaches and reserves you will visit later, turning a pretty tortoise or an odd-looking palm into part of a much bigger, stranger story.
A modest entry fee supports the museum, and its central position means it pairs naturally with the market, the clock tower and the temples and cathedrals of Victoria.

Visit it early in your trip, not late. A quick look at the coco de mer and the giant tortoises here makes everything you see afterwards, from the Vallée de Mai to the reserves, mean a great deal more.
