ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
The Anglican cathedral at the heart of Victoria. A calm, light-filled landmark of the little capital and a quiet marker of the mixed faiths that have shaped these islands.
A landmark of the capital
St Paul’s is the Anglican cathedral of the Seychelles, standing near the centre of Victoria within easy reach of the clock tower and the market. There has been an Anglican presence on this site for a very long time, and the cathedral you see today, rebuilt and modernised over the years, is a bright, calm and welcoming space that serves as the mother church of the islands’ Anglican community.
Together with the nearby Roman Catholic cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, it reflects the layered religious history of the Seychelles, where Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities have long lived side by side in one of the world’s smaller capitals.
Visiting
It is a working place of worship rather than a grand tourist monument, and that is its quiet appeal. Visitors are generally welcome to step inside and enjoy the peace and the light outside of services, with the usual courtesy of modest dress and a respectful, quiet presence. It takes only a few minutes and fits naturally into a walk around central Victoria.
Seen alongside the market, the clock tower and the colourful Hindu temple close by, the cathedral helps complete the picture of the small, walkable and surprisingly diverse heart of the Seychelles.
