Sir Selwyn-Clarke Market (Victoria Market)
Sir Selwyn-Clarke Market is the Victoria covered market — a two-storey colonial-era hall on Market Street that houses the city’s fresh fish, fruit, spices and vegetable trade. The fish section dominates the ground floor; the upstairs balcony has spice stalls and a couple of takeaways serving lunch.
Saturday morning is the time to go — 7am to noon, full activity, locals doing their weekly shop. Fresh catch comes in by 8am: bourgeois, job fish, tuna, octopus, sometimes lobster. Spices include real Seychelles vanilla, cinnamon bark, turmeric, cardamom. Photography is generally welcome — ask before close-up shots of vendors.
