GEORGE CAMILLE ART GALLERY
The gallery of Seychelles’ best-loved living artist. George Camille has spent a career painting the birds, boats, faces and colour of Creole island life, and his work has come to define how the islands see themselves.
The islands’ signature artist
George Camille is the most celebrated contemporary artist in Seychelles, and for many people his paintings are the visual language of the country. Over decades he has returned again and again to the same rich subjects, the seabirds and fruit bats, the fishing boats and market scenes, the plants and the everyday faces of Creole life, and rendered them in warm, confident colour that is instantly his own.
His images travel far beyond the gallery wall. Camille’s work has appeared on postage stamps, book covers and prints found in homes and hotels across the islands, so even visitors who never step inside a gallery often leave having seen his hand without knowing it.
Visiting the gallery
The gallery gives you the chance to see the originals and the finer prints together, and to understand the range behind the familiar motifs. It is a small, personal space rather than a vast museum, which suits the work, and staff are happy to talk you through pieces and options. Prints and cards make a genuine, made-in-Seychelles souvenir with real artistic weight behind it, a world away from the usual gift-shop fare.
A visit fits neatly into time spent in and around Victoria, and it pairs well with the market, the cathedral and the other small pleasures of the capital.
