BIRD ISLAND LODGE
A simple, wonderful eco-lodge on the northernmost island of the Seychelles, home to hundreds of thousands of nesting sooty terns, giant tortoises and empty white beaches.
Relaxed bungalows in a laid-back beachfront hotel featuring a restaurant & a bar.
An island of birds and turtles
Bird Island is the most northerly of the Seychelles, a low coral island reached by a short flight from Mahé. In season it hosts one of the great wildlife spectacles of the Indian Ocean, hundreds of thousands of sooty terns nesting across the island, along with turtles that come ashore to lay and Esmeralda, one of the largest giant tortoises on earth.
The lodge is deliberately simple, a scatter of comfortable bungalows with no televisions and no fuss, set among the palms just back from the beach. The point is the nature, the quiet and the sheer sense of space.
Barefoot, unplugged, unforgettable
Days here are for walking the beaches, watching the birds, snorkelling the reef and doing very little. It is family-run in feel, low-key and warm, with meals built around fresh fish and island cooking.
It suits nature lovers, families and anyone who wants an unplugged, back-to-basics island where the wildlife, not the resort, is the star.

Bird Island has only a handful of bungalows and its own flights, so it is worth booking ahead, especially in the tern-nesting season. Check dates and rooms to plan an unplugged wildlife escape.

Time it for the terns and slow right down. The sooty-tern colony from around May to September is the reason to come, so ask about the season when you book, and once there, let the birds, the beaches and the tortoises set the pace.
